Co-ordination of the research activities
The objectives of the Community action is to contribute to the creation of the European Research Area by stimulating and supporting programme coordination and joint activities conducted at national or regional level, as well as among European organisations, and thus help to develop the common knowledge base necessary for the coherent development of policies. These activities may be in any scientific and technological area, including in the thematic priority areas (see also the CORDISinformation on coordination of research activities).
ERA Coordination Projects in ICT
An IST/ICT ERA Pilot initiative has been developed to coordinate IST RTD efforts with National and regional activities across countries in an ICT domain (see also the information at http://cordis.europa.eu/ist/about/era.htm). At present about 20 ERA coordination initiatives relevant to the thematic priority Information Society Technologies (IST) have been launched with the support of the European Commission. The majority is funded by Directorate General (DG) Information Society, some of them by DG Research. In particular, a coordination action CISTRANA (Coordination of IST research and national activities), aim to achieve coordination of national ICT programmes with each other and with European RTD programmes in order to improve the impact of all RTD efforts in Europe and to reinforce European ICT competitiveness. A RESEARCH PORTAL has now been created to link national research projects.
An ERA Pilot Initiative in the Networked Enterprise and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)
At the end of 2004 an European co-ordination initiative in the area of the Networked Enterprise (PDF, 53KB) has been launched as well as an action plan (PDF, 54KB). The objective being that the D4 ERA co-ordination action could generate closer collaboration between projects, clusters of projects, European founded and Member States in one or more of the D4 unit research topics. Different activities have been promoted by the unit and a focussed ERA co-ordination study has been launched in December 2006. This study should contribute to create synergies between the European, national and regional research innovation programmes in the four key research domain of the unit, to set the basis for wider European collaboration, thus avoiding duplication of activities and targeting the effective implementation of research results at European, national and regional level.
