The cluster addresses the specific needs of the health professional for IST systems that support diagnosis and treatment, for user-friendly portable environments that allow timely access to specific health information from anywhere, or for technology that facilitates continuous learning, training and collaborative work in the health domain. The added value of the cluster is centred around interoperability, standardisation, validation, awareness and dissemination. There are currently two main thematic sub-clusters:
All projects aim to improve quality of care through improved diagnoses, more effective treatment, facilitating timely access to necessary information and providing better education of health professionals.
In particular, projects in the sub-cluster 1 develop and validate advanced medical imaging and minimally invasive techniques for diagnosis and treatment planning for cancer, heart failure and other major diseases. These systems will significantly decrease waiting and treatment time and will result in a treatment that is less painful and more effective. It is expected that these types of technologies will save lives and have a considerable impact in the public health domain, by increasing the quality of care as well as reinforcing the European medical equipment industry.
The projects in sub-cluster 2 aim at enabling doctors and nurses to remotely access vital information and consult the medical files of a patient whether from the surgery room, the hospital, the patient’s home or site of accident. The work is based on the integration of advanced interfaces (voice recognition, natural language understanding, etc) and novel mobile multimedia workstations with embedded communications means (GPRS, UMTS). The cluster will promote the use of medical digital assistants within the community of health professionals, will test and validate the interoperability of systems and explore new business models in the health market.
Work of common interests to the projects in sub-cluster 1 include the use of IST for the improving the accuracy of diagnosis of major diseases (cardiovascular, cancer, etc.), for increasing the effectiveness of intervention/surgery following this diagnosis and in the development of virtual and real scenarios for heart disease treatment. Moreover, legislation on medical devices and ethical issues related to the introduction of IST (including clinical trials) are considered and researched.
A large part of the research in sub-cluster 2 is centred around the development of medical digital assistants and ensuring their interoperability e.g. with respect to information exchange, communication means and application software. Furthermore work in the sub-cluster is concerned with the testing of user centred design models for accessing health information, the implementation and validation of state-of-the-art speech recognition technologies in specific environments (hospitals, surgery rooms…) and the use of natural language understanding systems in health care. Consideration is given to the market for these medical personal assistants and the business model(s) for making a success of these.
