Statistics

Context

Over the period from January 1999 to September 2002, the Health action lines have been open for call for proposals with fixed deadlines at several occasions. These are summarised below:

Calls

  • 1st Call for proposals - March 1999
  • 2nd Call for proposals - October 1999
  • 3rd Call for proposals - February 2000
  • 4th Call for proposals - July 2000
  • 5th Call for proposals - October 2000
  • 6th Call for proposals - January 2001
  • 7th Call for proposals - July 2001
  • 7thbis Call for proposals – September 2001
  • 8th Call for proposals - November 2001
  • Open Call - Continuous submission scheme (incl. SME specific actions)

The following data are statistics for the period January 1999 to September 2002 for contracts in the portfolio of the unit Applications relating to Health. As the 5th Framework Programme and the IST Programme are now at the end of the programme activities, these data represent a fair snapshot of the different calls. Statistics are, of course, due to evolve as projects are amended during their lifetime.

Further we would like to draw the attention of the reader to the fact that the Commission services has not attempted to draw any conclusion from the statistics represented, as for the above reason it is too early to make policy statements.

The table below gives an overall view of proposals received, projects resulting from the RTD calls and other types of actions.

Distribution of the EC contribution

Distribution per type of calls

84 % of the budget is allocated through the regular calls for RTD proposals.

Distribution per type of contracts

Distribution per type of activity sector

Because of the nature of the activities in KA1 and in the health domain, Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) are very well represented (although uncertainties related to the definition of large enterprises or SME remain due to an imprecise filling-in of the statistical part of the Contract Preparation Forms). An active industrial participation is to be noted.

Geographic distribution of co-ordinating organisations

The following figure shows the geographic distribution of the co-ordinating organisations.

Distribution per country

The next figure shows the total EC Contribution for partners in EU member states. Major non-EU countries include Cyprus, Israel, and Norway. More than twenty other countries receive funding.

The following figure breaks the figures down for the associated states (EFTA-EEA, NAS and others).
