Clustering Context for the Special Needs Projects

Objective

This cluster brought together projects that developed and demonstrated intelligent systems that enable people with special requirements to live independently. The work done in the projects addressed personal care, mobility and communication, improves access to a wider range of services and facilitates greater participation in social and community activities - including extended employment and learning opportunities. The specific aims of the cluster were: to maximise information exchange, to respect user requirements; to ensure interoperability of the systems under development; to contribute to relevant standards; and to enhance the exploitation potential of the projects involved.

Key work undertaken

The cluster supported independent living by developing such tools as personal devices (i.e. for tele-support), by designing systems for the home environment and by elaborating advanced solutions for professional and informal carers. Special attention was given to the further development and application of design-for-all tools and methods to focus on affordable and universal access to mainstream products and services.
