As the Fifth Framework Programme (1998-2002) nears conclusion, attention focuses on the next programme (the Sixth Framework Programme, 2002-2006), which is expected to be ratified and implemented in the course of 2002. It should be noted that many of the research actions and projects undertaken during FP5 will operate well beyond the four-year time frame of this programme.
