Programmes & Action Lines

What is a programme?

The Information Society Programme is one of seven research programmes under the umbrella Fifth Framework Programme (FP5), which has been organised into four Key Actions, or themes, addressing technological and developmental issues and objectives of strategic importance to Europe.

FP5 sets out the priorities for the European Union's research, technological development and demonstration (RTD) activities for the period 1998-2002. These priorities have been identified on the basis of a set of common criteria reflecting the major concerns of increasing industrial competitiveness and the quality of life of the European citizens.

Note: For information about the Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) covering the period 2002-2006, visit the Future Activities page on this site.

Programmes and the IST

At the Information Society Technologies Programme level, plans for each activity are detailed in a yearly work programme. This is organised around action lines to which the calls for proposals nominating future projects are linked.

Action Lines

Activities within the IST Programme, including Key Action 2, are organised into Action Lines from which the various 'actions' or projects are allocated and carried out. Follow this link For complete information regarding the KA2 Action Lines for the year 2000 and 2001.

Many of the projects have also been organised into 'clusters', which is the process of grouping RTD projects together according to their research priorities or market segments in order to maximise knowledge transfer and research synergies among the actors involved, whether they be businesses, industry, or indeed universities.

In the course of the Fifth Framework Programme (FP5), Key Action 2 has built a portfolio of actions covering RTD, accompanying measures, demonstration, combined projects, trial, best practice, thematic networks, and concerted actions addressing the processing and use of multimedia content in various application settings. For illustrative purposes, a list of Key Action 2 projects has been made available from the Project Pages of this website.
