COSMO.LAB IST-2000-28481
A tool for Stereographic Visualization and analysis of Astrophysical Data
- What?
- COSMO.LAB will adapt, extend and apply an existing tool (AstroMD) specifically geared towards astronomical problems. It will explore effective and intuitive ways of managing and analysing the large amounts of data produced by numerical astrophysical simulations and observational surveys.
- How?
- To make effective use of the existing tool the most advanced visualization techniques and platforms will be exploited, in particular Stereographic Visualisation and Virtual Reality. This trial project will be the first application to astronomy of these three-dimensional visualization techniques.
- Why?
- COSMO.LAB meets scientific and educational needs. Visualizing the three-dimensional structure of these objects permits easier recognition of their peculiarities and characteristics. The intuitive approach to complex concepts of astrophysics is likely to improve astrophysical knowledge acquisition and to help communicate scientific results to a wider audience.
- For whom?
- Scientists (astronomers, astrophysicists, etc.), students (of these subjects) as well as interested citizens are the target audience of COSMO.LAB.
- By whom?
- The COSMO.LAB partners contribute complementary expertise. Some of them are well known in the astrophysics/astronomy communities. The required skills in software development and advanced graphics are provided by CINECA and its highly competent VisIT (Visual Information Technology) laboratory.
