Wireless Home Networking

Brussels, 24 May 2000, 09.00 AM
Centre A. Borschette, Rue Froissart 36, Brussels

A workshop organised by the European Commission, DG Information Society - E 4

A plethora of wireless communications devices and services will be the main characteristic of the future wireless information society. It is estimated that as early as 2003, over one billion mobile subscribers will be able to take advantage of a vast number of wireless based services. In this context, it can be anticipated that the market for wireless networking of home devices will develop relatively fast with the home environment becoming, for the European citizen a natural extension of the cellular communications environment.

Current wireless networking solutions for the home are based on a variety of standards, operate in different frequency bands and have throughputs ranging typically from 1Mb/s to 20 Mb/s. New frequency ranges are under consideration and regulatory issues have been raised notably concerning the sharing of some bands by different technologies. From a service perspective, the use of such home networks will open new possibilities to manufacturers and application developers for the development of new ideas and products that would capitalise on the increasing requirements for wireless connectivity. Finally, from a technological perspective work is ongoing targeting wireless broadband home solutions that will cater for the requirements of machine to machine traffic and will as gateways towards external networks.

In the above context, the European Commission, DG Information Society-E, organises a one day workshop with the objective of raising the awareness of Wireless Home Networking and to identify technological and service issues requiring further R&D efforts.
