Cluster on Reconfigurability
Meeting of 28th June in Dublin

Agenda and Presentations

The following items were discussed:

  1. Current status of the cluster reconfigurability
  2. Workplan for the cluster activities
  3. Coordination of the cluster work

1. Current status and past cluster activities

According to the Commission there are three project clusters in the mobile communications domain: the cluster "systems beyond 3G", the cluster "reconfigurability", and the cluster "smart antennas".

On the 2.3.00 TRUST sent through the Commission a proposal for clustering to all IST IV.5 projects. Further, TRUST directly contacted projects for co-operation and so far the following projects have positively answered:

CAST
Parbhu Patel
EMERGENCE
Ursula Huws
MOBIVAS
Michel Riguidel
Philippe Weingertner
PASTORAL
Peter Ransome
SODERA
Christian Politano
SUITED
Paolo Conforto

There is also an interest to co-operate with the other two clusters of the mobile communications domain and to establish links for exchanging information. Both clusters will be kept informed about the activities of the cluster reconfigurability. The contact persons are:

Systems beyond 3G
Josef Urban
Werner Mohr
Smart antennas
Sylvie Mayrargue
Otello Gasparini

On the 24.5.00, TRUST invited all projects positively answered to a kick-off cluster meeting in Brussels and on the 25.5.00 TRUST gave a presentation on the cluster activities during the concertation meeting [4]. The CAST project joined the cluster activities during the cluster meeting and they provided support for the co-ordination of the sub-cluster "Enabling Technologies".

2. Cluster Activity and Report

It was proposed to describe the vision on reconfigurability by putting together a report. This report could be structured in the following way:

  • Introduction: overview on the ISTAG vision with regard to mobile and wireless communications
  • Current trends and status quo of current research
  • Vision on future reconfigurability
  • Scenarios illustrating the vision
  • Issues to be addressed in the futurec

The relevant sub-topics (service provider and user requirements, system concepts for re-configuration of networks and terminals, enabling technologies including technology requirements on reconfigurable networks and terminals) are co-ordinated by TRUST, MOBIVAS and CAST).

It was agreed among the four projects (MOBIVAS, PASTORAL, CAST, TRUST) that:

  • Each project participating in the cluster will describe its ideas on reconfigurability using the structure displayed in the cluster report [1].
  • The projects should also take into account the statements of the Commission [5] and the statements found in the ISTAG report [2].
  • The projects contributing to this report must sent at latest on the 24th July their input to the contact persons nominated by the three projects CAST, MOBIVAS and TRUST.
  • A first version of the cluster report must be ready on the 31.7.00. Therefore, the three co-ordinating projects should send their draft reports to Markus Dillinger by 27th July.
  • Markus will compile all these interim reports from CAST, MOBIVAS and TRUST into one document and will distribute this document to all projects of the cluster.
  • The document will be reviewed from 1st August on by email or telephone conferences.
  • A second physical meeting is scheduled during the IST Summit conference.
  • The final cluster report must be ready before the audit period, i.e. tentatively before middle of November.
