UWB CLUSTER
Context In the FP5 context, research activities in the area of UWB (ultra wideband) have fallen under the scope of the Key Action IV - Essential Technologies and Infrastructures, which was designed to build upon current European strengths in communication network technologies, digital broadcasting, consumer electronics, software and embedded systems and service concept innovation.
The UWB research activities have been placed in the context of Action Line IV.5 "Mobile and Personal Communications and Systems", addressing in particular the evolution of mobile/wireless systems and networks, with the longer term perspective of an integrated wireless multi-layer and hierarchical access network, allowing an increased number of terminals and devices to economically use scarce frequency resources. Action Line IV.5 includes research towards technologies, systems and networks beyond 3G and validation of wireless and mobile systems and technologies.
Objectives The major objectives of the UWB Cluster can be summarised as follows (open to further expansion):
active interaction with European UWB regulation and standardisation bodies extension of industry involvement to parties involved in UWB research and development, but not represented in the cluster release of white papers (regulation/standardisation) presentation to a future meeting of the Radio Spectrum Committee reporting to the next Concertation assembly in December 2003 promote UWB awareness and educational issues exchange of UWB research results IST projects involved Three FP5 IST projects have been launched to investigate certain aspects of UWB-RT as follows: whyless.com (www.whyless.com, launched on 1st January 2001 over 36 months, addressing the vision of an open platform for mobile, ubiquitous and seamless e-work and e-commerce based on a highly novel radio transmission principle. Ultra-wideband Concepts for Ad hoc Networks (UCAN, www.ucan.biz), launched on 1st January 2002 over 36 months. Ultra Wideband Audio Video Entertainment System (ULTRAWAVES, www.ultrawaves.org), launched on 14 April 2002 over 30 months. Contact person of cluster
