WLANs - A Research Perspective

A Workshop organised by the European Commission, DG INFSO-E4

Brussels, 17 October 2002

Albert Borschette, Room OA 36 Rue Froissart, Brussels, Belgium

The European Commission, DG Information Society - E4, Mobile and Personal Communications and Systems, organises a one day workshop with the objective of promoting awareness of Wireless LANs, discussing deployment and operational issues, and identifying the technological and service issues which require further R&D efforts in light of the 6th Framework Programme.

Issues to be discussed include delivery of real-time (RT) and NRT services, traffic shaping and resource management, infrastructure-based, ad hoc and meshed implementations, market prospects of the introduction of new services and applications, as well as routing, interoperability and spectrum issues. The latest R&D achievements within the IST projects will also be presented.

Many projects have been funded by the EU starting in the ACTS and continuing in the IST Programme in the area of Wireless LANs and Wireless Customer Premises Networks at 5, 17, 40 and 60 GHz. The ultimate goal of these projects was and is to provide high data rate services to the users indoors, on campus and in hot spots, while at the same time providing personalised, ubiquitous and seamless access to information on the move through the integration of such systems with a variety of other systems, namely cellular. In that sense, Always Best Connected remains a challenge, together with increased spectrum efficiency.
