Framework Programmes and IST
European research is organised around what is called Framework Programmes, which run in consecutive periods of five years. The Fifth Framework Programme (FP5) (1998-2002) sets out the priorities for the European Union's research, technological development and demonstration (RTD) activities. Information Society Technologies is one of seven specific programmes within FP5. It has been organised into four Key Actions or themes, of which Essential Technologies and Infrastructures is one, addressing technological issues and objectives of strategic importance to Europe.
