Background of our actions
- European Working Group on Libre Software (eu.conecta.it)
- Limited actions in 2000:
- 4th call: Adoption of open source software for embedded systems
5 projects mostly addressing embedded telecoms (routers, controllers, gateways). Probable start 1st June 2001. - 5th call: Experimental support to free / open source software development
1 project on robot control software. Probable start 1st September 2001. - Accompanying measure
Study on free / open source software statistics and economics
- 4th call: Adoption of open source software for embedded systems
2001 action line Free software development: towards critical mass
Overall objective
create a more favourable ecosystem for free / open source software development in Europe, by supporting some critical components:
- Support service for developers
- Bootstrap of some types of innovative development
- Assessment of technology, economics and business models
Call to be published 15 June 2001
Closing date: 17 October 2001.
Watch: cordis.europa.eu/ist/calls/calls.htm.
Support services for free software developers at all stages of the project lifecycle
- European dimension essential
- Innovation in functionality and/or addressing European problems such as internationalisation / language support
- Services and their technology basis, but development plans should allow for quick deployment
- Generic services or specialised for a sufficiently wide user category
- Implementation through accompanying measure contract
- Clear trajectory towards sustainability required
Trials of free software development:
Media technology for personal users, co-operative information production and sharing, usability
- Usability includes internationalisation issues
- Support until initial open release
- Rationale for usefulness of the projected software and release / dissemination plans essential
- Implementation through trial take-up contract
- At least one organisation as principal contractor (if more than one, from at least 2 different EU countries or one EU + one associated state). Developers (individuals or organisations) can have "member" status
Socio-economic studies on technology assessment, economic assessment and derived business models
- Must demonstrate clear added-value compared to existing studies
- Results should be useful to the programme (for elaboration of policy orientations) and to the players in the field (for technology and business model choices)
- Implementation through accompanying measure studies contract
Rules of the game for pre-proposal presentation
- 37 pre-registered presentations! 2 minutes each
Stick to the essential: What is the proposed project? How to contact you to learn more about it - No feedback from the Commission during the presentations: contact us bilaterally today or later to enquire about whether a proposal fits in the scope
