Combined Signal Processing & Mixed Reality and Interfaces and Enhanced Services Concertation Meeting
13-14 March 2003, Brussels
Report - Participants
Thursday, 13 March 2003
Plenary Session
News items: Report on the status of the public consultation
on the Communication to the Council and the EP on Barriers to Open Platforms
and the initial preparation of a Communication on Digital Switchover.
The DVB-SB have decided to study the relevance of an MHP 'light'. The
reading of the recent CENELEC report on Standardisation of DITV was
recommended.
Planning of Concertation Activities:
Next Concertation Meetings: The following dates were proposed:
June 25-26 and October 14-15. The projects are requested to check these
dates for conflicts and report them before March 31.
Common Exhibitions/Symposia: The following exhibitions were
discussed:
IFA2003, 29 August - 3 September, Berlin
IBC2003, 11-16 September, Amsterdam
IST2003, 2-4 October SMAU, Milano
Several projects gave an overview of their plans. A larger presentation
was given by ADOPT-IT, an accompanying measure project managed by our
colleagues in Luxembourg. This project can offer support in the preparation
of these kind of events. See the report on the workshop on the preparation
of exhibitions held on 14 March.
Integrated Audit: The Commission proposes that this takes place
in week 49 or 50. There were no strong feelings against this. A substantial
number of projects wants to give a demo at the audit.

Parallel Sessions
Interfaces and Enhanced Services
1. SAVANT/CIMUNDUS/FUTURE HOME Workshop (Part 1)
2. Workshop on remote control for Audio-Visual Systems
Presentations by the projects: SPATION, GMF4iTV, ICE-CREAM, WEBKIT,
MEGA and ARDOR: the slides of these projects will be collected. A report
is being prepared by Antonio Camurri. SPATION presented the new extended
remote control I-PRONTO of Philips. It is clear that all applications
that the projects are working on should be put in the remote control
PDA, and this will need to be a rather powerful device. There are even
more projects working on this than the ones present in this workshop.
Signal Processing & Mixed Reality
Workshop on image processing and vision
for mixed reality (Oliver Grau - ORIGAMI, BBC)

FP6 Happy Hour in Brasserie Le "1898": This social event was much-appreciated by the participants. About 25 delegates were present. It should be repeated.

Parallel Sessions
Interfaces and Enhanced Services
1. SAVANT/CIMUNDUS/FUTURE HOME Workshop (Part 2)
2. Project presentations
This became a spontaneous session on MPEG21/DRM. MUFFINS gave a planned
presentation. Projects MOSES and SHARE-IT gave unplanned presentations.
It became clear that SHARE-IT could still not see how MPEG21 could provide
a solution to the problem of preparing a consumer terminal for the many
possible proprietary DRM systems. The slides will be collected.
3. Workshop on preparation of Exhibitions
IBC2003: Maddy Janse will take the lead in organising a common
stand for the following projects: ICE-CREAM, SPATION, SHARE-IT and MOSES.
CISMUNDUS, MUFFINS and FUTURE-HOME need still to be confirmed. The idea
is to have a stand very similar to the one in IBC2001. A common theme
and a team will be looked for. The information will be circulated to
the projects in Rich Media Communication. This could perhaps lead to
one or two additional projects. This workshop was just in time as the
deadline for claiming stand space was March 14.
IFA2003: John Holden will take the lead in organising the stand.
The projects: ICE-CREAM, WEBKIT and TPMHP have shown the strongest interest
for the 8*6 common area. This will also be circulated to the Rich Media
Communication projects.
IST2003. No clear ideas have yet been developed. Projects
asked about the possibility of organising the October Concertation Meeting
co-located with this event.

FP6 Open Session - FP6 Concertation
David Wood and Maddy Janse presented ideas on the organisation of concertation
in FP6. The participants seemed to agree with these ideas. We have to
find the right instrument for this.
