Content4All
Cross Platform Tools for Community Content Publishing
The general objective of CONTENT4ALL (C4All) has been to develop a Cross-media framework, taking advantage of the peer-to-peer phenomenon and emerging related opportunities. C4All explored creation of peer-to-peer cross-media intelligent content management model, based on open source standards, where next generation affinity communities can meet individuals' and organizations' needs.
Impact
C4All provided a clear view of the societal and citizen trends related to cross-media leisure & entertainment, cross-media virtual/affinity communities, business and legal challenges, and methodologies in the cross-media publishing market. The project deployed a complete framework to develop intelligent media management methodologies, for publishing/distribution over heterogeneous devices. Furthermore, an open-source cross-media peer-to-peer (P2P) platform for leisure, entertainment and communication was developed. C4All built-up a demonstrator in the tourism-information sector to disseminate C4A project results, including to contribute and/or to start relevant standards, and to implement a simulation of business model for the cross-media P2P market.
Main innovation
- Combination and integration of trusted publisher content (the industry) with end users generated content (the peers)
- Coherent access to content/metadata from devices (PC, TV, PDA, mobile) and different sources (image, audio, video, messages, notes, group information and user preferences with their associated metadata)
- Access to the P2P network from mobile and TV
Results
The project started in September 2004 with the definition of the market and user requirements. Then, the first version of the system specifications was defined and development of the first prototype began. C4All had already developed a functional prototype based on a case study of travel infotainment in Europe. This prototype works on iTV, mobile, PDA , web and PC application. In the demonstration a user can navigate content in iTV while watching a video, bookmark content, and login to the server. Content can be browsed also using mobile, PDA, and the PC application. The user can chat through mobile, PC, and PDA, and also their presence and status can be detected.
Moreover different standardization activities had been done in:
- TV-Anytime: Participation of partners in different meetings held in Sydney, San Diego, Tokyo and Geneva.
- DVB-MHP: Contribution to DVB-MHP SPEC group in relation with MHP 1.1.2 specification bugs and ideas for improvements.
Major Results and Achievements of the Project
- Anytime access through any digital device
- Combination and integration of trusted publisher content (the industry) with end-user-generated content (the peers)
- Coherent access to content/metadata from different sources (image, audio, video, messages, notes, group information and user preferences with their associated metadata)
- Content referencing approach (CRID)
- extended usage of the TVAnytime/IETF CRID content referencing for different content types (images, videos, texts, annotations, etc.)
- extended usage from broadcasting to additional network types (P2P and standard client/server)
- Inclusion of a self-regulating moderation system based upon the analysis of users participation in the community
- Mechanisms for monitoring nature of contents based on community requirements and nature (illegal, inappropriate community content)
- mechanisms to issue warnings
- mechanisms to ban the content items
- A part of the P2P functionality (file search, download) is available also on mobile devices and STBs via gateways on the central server
C4A has achieved an important goal: the technical feasibility of a P2P and cross-media system which might be applied for any further development of any kind of virtual community.
