A Co-ordination Network for Agent-Based Computing
An agent is a computer system capable of flexible and autonomous action in dynamic, unpredictable and typically multi-agent domains. AgentLink III is a Co-ordination Action aiming to support European research and development in agent technologies.

Advanced and Innovative Models And Tools for the development of Semantic-based systems for Handling, Acquiring, and Processing knowledge Embedded in multidimensional digital objects

The mission of AIM@SHAPE is to advance research in the direction of semantic-based shape representations and semantic-oriented tools to acquire, build, transmit and process shapes with their associated knowledge. We foresee a new generation of shapes in which knowledge is explicitly represented and, therefore, can be retrieved, processed, shared and exploited to construct new knowledge.

Superpeer Semantic Search Engine

ALVIS conducts research in the design, use and interoperability of topic-specific search engines with the goal of developing an open source prototype of a distributed, semantic-based search engine.

Argumentation Service Platform with Integrated Components

ASPIC is developing a theoretical framework to support the creation and deployment of advanced knowledge technologies called argumentation systems. Formal argumentation models have been developed for inference, decision-making, learning and multi-agent dialogue and the remaining work on the project is concerned with translating the models into standard software components, and demonstrating their use in significant applications in eBusiness, eHealth and other domains. A Semantic-Based Knowledge Flow System for the European Home Textile Industry

AsIsKnown represents a system designed for a non invasive, cross-sector development and management of trends. The aim is the identification of product combination trends in the European home textiles industry.

Automating Production of Cross Media Content for Multichannel Distribution

The AXMEDIS project aims to meet the challenges of the market demand by: (i) reducing costs for content production and management for content composition, representation (format), protection and workflow; (ii) reducing distribution and aggregation costs in order to increase accessibility with a P2P at B2B level, which can integrate content management systems and workflows; (iii) providing new methods and tools for innovative and flexible Digital Rights Management (DRM), including the exploitation of MPEG-21 and overcoming its limitations, and supporting different business and transactions models and multi-channel distribution.

Bootstrapping Ontology Evolution with Multimedia Information Extraction

A bootstrapping approach to knowledge acquisition, which uses multimedia ontologies for fused extraction of semantics from multiple modalities, feeding back the extracted information.

BOOTStrep is pulling together already existing biological fact databases as well as various terminological repositories and is implementing a text analysis system which continuously increases its coverage by analysing biological documents.

Content Analysis and Retrieval Technologies to Apply Knowledge Extraction to massive Recording

The CARETAKER project aims at studying, developing and assessing multimedia knowledge-based content analysis, knowledge extraction components, and metadata management sub-systems in the context of automated situation awareness, diagnosis and decision support.

Cross Platform Tools for Community Content Publishing

The general objective of CONTENT4ALL is to develop a Cross-media framework taking advantage of the peer-to-peer phenomenon and emerging related opportunities. CONTENT4ALL will explore creation of peer-to-peer cross-media intelligent content management model, based on open source standards, where next generation affinity communities can meet individuals' and organizations' needs.

The major mission of DIP is to furhter develop Semantic Web and Web services and especially to enable their combination

DIP's objective is to develop and extend Semantic Web and Web Service technologies in order to produce a new technology infrastructure for Semantic Web Services (SWS) - an environment in which different web services can discover and cooperate with each other automatically. DIP's long term mission is to deliver the enormous potential benefits of Semantic Web Services to e-Work and e-Commerce.

DIRECT-INFO's vision is to create a basic system for semi-automatic extraction of consistent and meaningful semantic information from multimedia content. The result of the project will be a flexible system that would be easy to re-configure according to user needs, comprising several components that implement the needed functionality for analysing of multimedia data taking advantage of combining complementary analysis results of different content to semantic meaningful entities.

Advanced Tools for Developing Highly Realistic Computer Games

The GameTools project will create next generation real time 3D libraries for Geometry, Visibility and Global Illumination for the PC platform, with an extension to consoles PS2, Xbox, PS3, Xbox 360 planned.

Holographic and Action Capture Techniques

The HOLONICS project is aimed at the development of advanced 3D Displays and Human Action Capturing technologies. HOLONICS' holographic 3D displays will ofer unrivalled naked eye presentation of high quality 3D contents to multiple simultaneous users. In addition, HOLONICS' Action Capturing technologies will achieve real-time automatic acquisition of human action data (geometry, volume and texture).

INSCAPE aims at enabling ordinary people to use and master the latest Information Society Technologies for interactively conceiving, authoring, and experiencing interactive stories whatever their form, be it training simulators, animation, theatre, movie, puppet show, video-games, interactive manuals, etc.

KnowledgeBoard is a Specific Support Action whose goal is to activate and facilitate this European KM community and further develop it by including the different schools of thought in KM and all the European and global regions less represented today and to turn the existing KnowledgeBoard into a model and reference for virtual networks offering customised services, collaboration space, and a supporting infrastructure to European research projects and industrial players.

Supporting the transition process of Ontology technology from Academia to Industry

The mission of Knowledge Web is to strengthen the European industry and service providers in one of the most important areas of current computer technology: Semantic Web enabled E-work and E-commerce. The project concentrates its efforts around frontline research to "realize the semantic web". The consortium includes the key European players involved in setting up the existing semantic-web standards and is directly involved in defining extensions of these, e.g., for web services and for rules area. In addition, the network has a mission to disseminate this technology through the development of educational resources and an outreach activity to industry, targeting promising applications areas of this technology in both commercial and non-profit fields.

K-Space aims to narrow the gap between automatically computed content descriptors, and the richness and subjectivity of semantics in high-level human interpretations of audiovisual media: The Semantic Gap.

Crossmedia programming of sports. Enhanced format provisioning and streamlined cross-platform production of live content and additional user information

The goal of LEMATCH is to research and further develop a set of technologies, which will create new revenue streams from advertising, user interaction and transaction and will help to reduce the costs of cross media sports live productions.

Live Staging of Media Events

LIVE will create novel intelligent content production methods and tools for interactive digital broadcasters to stage live mass media events such as the 2008 Olympic Games.

Learning Content Management System Using Innovative Semantic Web Services Architecture

LUISA addresses the development of a reference semantic architecture for the major challenges in the search, interchange and delivery of learning objects in a service-oriented context. This entails the technical description of the solution in terms of current SWS technology, and also the provision of the ontologies, facilities and components required to extend and enhance existing learning technology systems with the advanced capabilities provided by computational semantics.

Discovering, inter-relating and navigating cross-media campaign knowledge

MediaCampaign's scope is on discovering, inter-relating and navigating cross-media campaign knowledge. A media campaign is a collection of advertisements semantically belonging together, across different countries and different media. The project's main goal is to automate to a large degree the detection and tracking of media campaigns on television, Internet and in the press.

Multimedia Semantic Syndication for Enhanced News Services

MESH is an Integrated Project whose main objective is to extract, compare and combine content from multiple multimedia news sources, automatically create advanced personalised multimedia summaries, syndicate summaries and content based on the extracted semantic information, and provide end users with a 'multimedia mesh' news navigation system.

Methodology and tools infrastructure for the creation of knowledge units
METOKIS investigated the use of semantic technologies in knowledge-intensive subject fields. Results are a semantic content model called "knowledge content objects" and software to handle these objects, as well as a methodology for assessing the cost-benefit and for implementation of semantics-based applications.

NeOn addresses the complete R&D cycle of the emerging new generation of semantically enriched applications, which exist and operate in an open environment of highly contextualized, evolving and networked ontologies. NeOn aims to achieve and facilitate the move from feasibility in principle to a concrete solution focusing on cost efficiency and effectiveness of knowledge acquisition for, and design, development and maintenance of large-scale, heterogeneous semantic-based applications.

The Social Semantic Desktop - Networked Environment for Personal Ontology-based Management of Unified Knowledge

NEPOMUK brings together researchers, industrial software developers, and representative industrial users, to develop a comprehensive solution for extending the personal desktop into a collaboration environment which supports both the personal information management and the sharing and exchange across social and organizational relations. This solution is called the Social Semantic Desktop.

NEWS develops News Intelligence Technology for the Semantic Web. Its main purpose is to supply news producers and consumers with automated tools for personalized content annotation, analysis, syndication, and intelligent retrieval.

NM2 will create new production tools for the media industry that will allow the easy production of non-linear broadband media, which can be personalised to suit the preferences of the individual user. Retrieval of Video and Language for the Home user in an Information Society

REVEAL THIS develops content programming technology able to capture, semantically index, categorise and cross-link multimedia and multilingual digital content coming from different sources, such as television, radio and the web. Users of the system will satisfy their information needs through personalized semantic search and retrieval, summaries of content and translation of them into their desired language.

Semantic Interaction with Music Audio Contents

The SIMAC project addresses the study and development of innovative components for an audio-based music information retrieval system. The key feature is the usage and exploitation of semantic descriptors of musical content that are automatically extracted from music audio files. The exploitation of semantic descriptors adds value to music collections by facilitating operations such as organization, visualization, navigation, recommendation and similarity-based search.

Intelligent Self-describing Technical and Environmental Networks

S-TEN's objective is to exploit the "Semantic Web" for scientific and engineering applications, and to provide support for decision makers in a complex and continuously changing environment. This support is based upon the application of rules and process knowledge to measurements, human observations and design information published on the Web. Data acquisition and process control is assisted by self-describing devices, e.g. measurement sensors or intelligent subsystems, installed in the considered technical systems.

X-Media addresses the issue of knowledge management in complex distributed environments. It studies, develops and implements large scale methodologies and techniques for knowledge management able to support sharing and reuse of knowledge that is distributed in different media (images, documents and data) and repositories (data bases, knowledge bases, document repositories, etc.).
