HOLONICS
Holographic and Action Capture Techniques

The HOLONICS project aimed at the development of advanced 3D Displays and Human Action Capturing technologies. HOLONICS' holographic 3D displays looked to offer unrivalled naked eye presentation of high quality 3D contents to multiple simultaneous users. In addition, HOLONICS' Action Capturing technologies achieved real-time automatic acquisition of human action data (geometry, volume and texture).

Impact

HOLONICS' 3D products can perform in a number of promising market sectors: medical imaging, kiosks, games, amusement parks, live events, corporate and on-spot advertising, trade fairs and exhibitions, virtual training and simulation, museums, tourism, CAD and professional modelling, education, scientific research, etc.

Main innovation

Holographic technology offers unrivalled naked eye presentation of high quality 3D contents to multiple simultaneous users.

HOLONICS 3D displays are crisp, stable and offer true 3D experiences with a high depth of view. HOLONICS' displays show objects in perspective according to the point of view of each user. In general, this point of view is different for every user, and hence the content displayed will be also different. Users are able to walk freely around the screen within a field of view of 50 degrees, seeing the objects and shadows moving continuously and smoothly, without perceptible alteration of the quality of the presentation. The displays also correctly show the ordering of the different layers in the scene, so that closer layers occlude layers that are more distant to the user. When occlusions are removed due to a change in the viewpoint, lower layers are revealed naturally. HOLONICS' displays allow looking behind the objects, hidden details appearing, while others disappear, as in motion parallax. HOLONICS' 3D sessions are performed naked eye, i.e. the user is not required to wear any kind of device. As a result, devices that are characteristics of other types of 3D displays, such as cabling, positioning sensors, helmets, glasses or similar, are not required. No preparation or conditioning of the scenario is required either. HOLONICS' displays are also able to operate under normal indoor ambience lighting conditions.

HOLONICS' displays come in two sizes: a 30-inch diagonal screen device and a 3x2 meter wall-size Panel Type Display.

HOLONICS' Action Capture System is able to capture the complete 3D geometry, texture and kinematics of the body of a person (actor) in real time. Using a set-up of cameras arranged in the scenario, the Action Capturer takes as input multiple video sequences, processes  them by means of the bundled computer vision platform and produces a 3D output representation that can be rendered and manipulated using computer animation techniques.
The system uses contact-less technologies. No special markers, sensors, clothes, gloves, lighting, nor specially equipped laboratories are required. The Action Capturer is person independent, the produced 3D models are photo-realistic, highly resembling the appearance of the actor and the captured 3D movements are natural and accurate.

The Action Capturer is also cost effective. Unlike existing systems, the Action Capturer runs on standard hardware and software and thus offers better performance and increased functionality, while observing a price range similar to existing Optical Motion Capture systems.
