METOKIS - Methodology and Tools Infrastructure for the Creation of Knowledge Units

METOKIS investigated the use of semantic technologies in knowledge-intensive subject fields. Results are a semantic content model called "knowledge content objects" and software to handle these objects, as well as a methodology for assessing the cost-benefit and for implementation of semantics-based applications.

Impact

METOKIS contributes significantly to a bundle of emerging technologies that are needed to make the "next generation World Wide Web" possible. At its heart is the newly defined "knowledge content object" which is planned to become an intelligent exchange mechanism for complex media content.

METOKIS's main innovation

The main innovation of METOKIS was to show how the combination of

1) a standardised semantic content model;
2) a specific infrastructure for this content model and
3) a protocol to query and manipulate the knowledge and content objects would pave the way for a broad class of semantics-based applications in so-called "knowledge intensive domains".

One particular strength of METOKIS was to base the models on a "foundational ontology" which could serve as the basis for other ontologies. The technology is complemented by a methodology handbook explaining the new kinds of systems enabled by METOKIS.

METOKIS's result

METOKIS investigated the use of semantic web technologies for electronic publishing in knowledge-intensive subject fields such as News Services, Education, and Clinical Studies. The project results are an open Semantic Content Model and software to handle these semantics-based content objects, as well as a methodology for assessing the cost-benefit and for planning the introduction of semantics-based content applications in knowledge intensive organisations.
