SWING
Semantic Web Services Interoperability for Geospatial decision making
The project aimed at deploying Semantic Web Service (SWS) technology in the geospatial domain. We worked on developing ontologies and tools for semantic annotation of geospatial web services and for discovery and composition of such services.
Impact
SWING's aim was to provide end users with better functionality to discover and utilise existing geospatial services for mineral resource management. Further, specialist users are supposed to annotate, compose and deploy composite services and make them available for end users.
Main innovation
The main innovation is that of combining multi-lingual natural language processing and annotation technologies with domain ontologies and semantic web service technology in three different settings. The first is a geospatial decision support application for mineral resource management. It utilises SWS to do context based discovery of data and processing services. The second is a commercial on-line catalogue (RedSpider Catalog) of geospatial web services. It utilises annotation technology to provide semantic mark-up of web service entries and SWS discovery to enhance the catalogue's search capabilities. The third is an open source service development environment built on the Eclipse platform. It utilises SWS for discovery and orchestration of geospatial web services.
