WORLDSCREEN - Layered Compression Technologies for Digital Cinematography and Cross Media Conversion
WorldScreen has investigated the use of layered scheme data compression algorithms, in particular JPEG2000, for the improvement of digital cinema workflows and cross media conversion.
Impact
The creation of movie content for presentation to the market needs many processing steps because of the large number of formats like Digital Cinema, TV, DVD, Internet streaming formats, IP-TV and so on. New workflows with layered scheme compression open up solutions for efficient access and processing of movie data by using different layers within a compressed image file with various resolutions and qualities.
Main innovation
WorldScreen has collected user requirements and defines models for digital cinema, electronic cinema and rich media archive. In the postproduction the creation of smaller formats like DVD, Internet streaming formats from different layers of the compressed file have been investigated. For the distribution, they have worked on developing a FPGA/DSP based JPEG2000 decoder. All developments have been accompanied by quality assessment tests to guarantee the highest quality possible.
Result
- WorldScreen has completed a first round of collecting user requirements
- Economical models and metadata models for Digital Cinema, Electronic Cinema and Rich media archive have been designed
- Simulations on optimized parameters for data acquisition and distribution has been done (mainly for the field Digital Cinema)
- Postproduction test for creating derived formats have been done
- Quality assessment test have been realisized in a cinema environment
- Main contributions to JPEG2000 and MXF standardisation have been done
