Horst Forster, Director at the European Commission, Directorate 'Content', chaired the session on 'Semantic Technology - A European perspective' with some of the leading academic and industrial experts in the field.

Further (the order reflects a progression from theory to practice) Van Harmelen talked about theory of knowledge representation formalisms and reasoners, Giunchiglia on what organisational and networking features are necessary to ensure that these technologies are in fact widely adopted; Fensel talked about how to bring these technologies in the world of businesses and services. Davies explained what is needed to introduce them in the world of corporate knowledge management and information retrieval. Davies finally asked the other three speakers which technologies are closest to be mature enough for deployment and what the deployment path should be:
