Framework Programmes and IST
European research is structured around Framework Programmes which set out the priorities for the European Union's research, technological development and demonstration (RTD) activities over a given period. These priorities have been identified on the basis of a set of common criteria reflecting major concerns of Europe's citizens.
The Information Society Technologies (IST) Programme, which ostensibly covers RTD in information, communication and technology, is represented in consecutive Framework Programmes.
