Closing the innovation gap

 
    A second extensive study of innovation in the 13 candidate countries confirms that they are lagging behind the EU. Improving manufacturing productivity should be the goal when the new Structural and Cohesion Funds become available.

new report(1) published by the European Commission's Innovation Directorate completes a two-stage study into innovation performance in the 13 countries seeking membership of the European Union. The study, examining conditions in Bulgaria, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Romania, Slovakia and Turkey, complements an earlier report(2) which looked at Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Poland and Slovenia. All but Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey are expected to join the EU in May next year.
