Growth paths of technology- based companies in life sciences and information technology

ISBN 92-894-4569-6, NB-NA-17054-EN-C
This study, conducted on behalf of the Commission’s Enterprise DG with funding from the Innovation and SMEs programme, looks at the conditions which both help and hinder the development of high-tech companies in two key sectors, life sciences and information technology. Taking a sample of companies in various regions, the study team first investigated the entrepreneurial climate and its effects on the performance of companies. Next they looked at the configuration of start-up firms, and the influence of their regional environment on managers and supporters of new companies. Finally, they discuss the relationship between the start-up phase and growth at different stages, and the effect of the market on company growth.

benchmarking European tax and legal environments

This benchmarking report, published by the European Private Equity and Venture Capital Association (EVCA), compares indicators of tax and legal environments favouring the development of private equity and venture capital in EU Member States. It aims to explain the optimum environment in which entrepreneurship can flourish, as well as illustrating the substantial divergence at present between existing EU Member State tax and legal environments. The comparison should encourage EU Institutions, Member State governments, and other stakeholders to look at best practice with a view to developing convergence.

Science and Innovation

ISBN 1-84376-109-2, £75
Edited by a team from the University of Sussex’s Science and Technology Policy Research Unit, this book re-examines the rationale for public funding and support for research. It argues that we are moving to a much more ‘distributed’ or ‘networked’ model of knowledge production and use, involving both public and private organisations filling complementary roles. Therefore, it is no longer necessary to have a single, all-encompassing rationale for the public funding of research. Rather, there is a need for new systems of governance in science and innovation, with policy aimed at supporting and expanding research networks of both public and private actors.

Lessons for those developing or leading clusters will be drawn out and there will also be an opportunity for exchange of ideas amongst existing clusters.
