Balkan variation on a European theme
The first European Day of the Entrepreneur to be organised in eastern Europe took place in Sofia in October 2003. St Kliment Ohridski University and Sofia Municipality played host to the event, using a model pioneered under the European Commission's PAXIS initiative.

  Working together achieves more
The European Extended Enterprise for Innovation (TEEE-Inn) project aims to reduce the risks incurred in starting up high-tech companies, and to develop communities of interest focused on market demand rather than technology offers.

  Meeting of minds
The Gate2Growth initiative has been running for nearly 18 months, but difficult economic conditions around the world have made its job much more difficult. The matching service, one of the key components of Gate2Growth, aims to help young high-tech firms obtain investment. Despite the economy's woes, it is starting to bring results for its clients.

  Openness to innovation
European patenting needs to be more about making information available to encourage innovation and less about protecting inventions, according to delegates at November's Patinnova conference. And while Europe considers how to improve systems, the US and Japan are also looking at how their own systems can be bettered.
