  Competition needed for more innovation
    Implementing the Lisbon strategy will bless Europe with strong economic growth and high employment, and all this in a sustainable environment – if the targets are met. Both the Commission and the Council agree that delivery of these targets is faltering – so they are calling on a group of leading figures to evaluate progress and contribute to the way forward.
 
  It’s all in the recipe
    A report by the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise warns that urgent action is needed if Europe is to cope with the changes in our industrial landscape. It notes how seriously the new Member States are taking the Lisbon goals and urges the older ones to step up their efforts.
 
  Creating a national innovation framework
    Last year, the United Kingdom undertook a fundamental review of policies affecting innovation, setting out a detailed action plan in December’s Innovation Report. Here Lord Sainsbury, the UK’s Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Science and Innovation, discusses the issues identified in the report.
 
  New industry structures, or de-industrialisation?
    The European Commission outlines the ongoing efforts to create a competitive environment for business in its recent industrial policy Communication. It proposes means to streamline procedures and lift administrative burdens. It describes how the Commission aims to free up resources in order to tackle the most serious obstacles to competition, as well as the contributions already made to industrial competitiveness.
