Theme
New bibliographic record products and services applying internationally recognised standards (Theme 17)
Project description
The objective was to develop an enhanced library service based on a CD-ROM product integrated in the library environment. Tools and methods were developed for preparing multimedia profiles of 46 modern authors from Denmark, Ireland and Portugal.
The project analysed user response and search strategies in relation to multimedia products for literature by carrying out tests in libraries in the three countries involved. Aspects reviewed included user interface design, presentation and effectiveness.
The project also developed a coordinated strategy for copyright issues relating to the presentation of multimedia material in electronic form.
Technical approach
MUMLIB was structured into five inter-linked phases addressing:
  • User requirements, analysing existing multimedia products in the library sector;
  • Market analysis;
  • Use of standards;
  • Copyright issues;
  • Selection of authors;
  • Collection of source material;
  • Editing and database tools;
  • Preparation of source material;
  • Design of user interface;
  • Storyboard and hypertext markup;
  • Development of multimedia products;
  • CD-ROM production of multimedia PC (MPC) implementation;
  • Pilot test;
  • Information dissemination.
Key issues
  • examination of user requirements and user reactions;
  • an attractive product making effective use of state-of-the-art techniques;
  • standards for developing multimedia products.
Impact and results
The attractive CD-ROM product now developed provides the basis for an integrated bibliographic service based on the development of linkages with existing catalogue records in the local environment. The service offers users both bibliographical and biographical information giving them a real context rather than just a listing of the author's works. Full use is made of text, sound, graphics and moving video.
The project provided a series of reports covering market analysis, technical aspects, design methodology, standards, copyright and user reactions.
Deliverables
The main deliverable has been the CD-ROM of authors itself . Initially distribution has targeted libraries in the participating countries but the product will become more widely available in accordance with the marketing strategy and the copyright agreements reached. Other restricted or confidential publications include:
  • Strategy for copyright negotiation;
  • Collected materials;
  • Technical reports on material markup, and editor tools;
  • Manuals on user interface design and storyboard structure.

Already available are:

  • a state on copyright laws in Denmark, Ireland and Portugal;
  • a report on user needs;
  • standards within multimedia technology.
Reports within the public domain will include:
  • Analysis of existing multimedia;
  • Market analysis;
  • Standards recommendations;
  • Copyright holder agreements;
  • Author selection;
  • Principles for collecting material;
  • Methodology study;
  • Testing;
  • Final report.

Wordsmith, a CD-ROM which resulted from the project, is available for Dublin City Libraries at: http://ireland.iol.ie/resource/dubcitylib/wsframes.htm
