- The main objectives of the SOCKER project were:
- to test the viability of the ISO SR standard through actual development
- to implement the client side of SR within 3 environments (CD-ROM workstation, library system, neutral network access point)
- to disseminate the expertise by active pilots in the EC countries
- to act as a testbed for existing target implementations (ION, SRnet).
- The project used existing ISO development software (ISODE) to implement SR on standard platforms. It first examines the options chosen in the co-operating target systems and developped a kernel to be ported on the 3 different environments, and then adapted to the local interfaces. The project focused on the problems related to the use of international networks, and on query language translation. It provided input to the standardisation process by reporting on the results of the initial study phase and of the dissemination stage. 2 pilot phases were foreseen: a closed pilot especially at the sites using one of the participants' environment, and an open pilot where the workstation implementation will be extensively tested, if possible at sites located in Southern countries.
- The project was structured as a series of workpackages and tasks:
- SR profiles and target hosts;
- Kernel specification and development;
- Information service workstation (ISW);
- Library system workstation (LSW) with SR origin;
- Network service point (NSP) for SR access;
- End-user involvement.
- The project has taken a classical approach for the development of software.
- After a study phase of the SR standard and the user requirements, the different systems are designed and implemented. The originality is in the development of a common kernel which is to be used by the 3 participants to integrate in their environment. The testing stage is to be carried out within an operational context. Technology used will be ISODE for the communication software and UNIX as standard the development platform. Both X25 and TCP/IP are the basic communication protocols.
- The main technical issues to be explored are:
- Foster implementation of ISO standards in libraries;
- Spread expertise on OSI in Europe;
- Prepare basis for uniform access to library catalogues, by having one workstation accessing multiple targets;
- Encourage the use of distributed library resources.
Impact and expected results
- Impact - improve active participation in standards making in Europe in this area.
- Results - SOCKER end-products freely available for dissemination and demonstration purposes; user survey on pilot operation; input/ participation to/in standardisation bodies.
- By providing a kernel consisting of an inter-compatible SR origin implementation and a toolbox with request proc-edures, SOCKER gives tailored, unif-ied access to all databases which meet ISO standards for search and retrieval. It will therefore greatly encourage the international usage of bibliographic information across European libraries and rationalise the associated work in libraries by doing so. The recommendations to ISO will help the SR standard to correspond more closely to practical requirements
- SOCKER has over 40 deliverables, of three distinct types: the SR origin kernel (Z39.50 V3 compliant), three end-user systems and numerous reports.
- Confidential and restricted category deliverables include:
- Kernel recommendations, requirements and specification;
- Specifications for individual front-end SR targets;
- CD-ROM target analysis;
- Exploitation plans, requirement analyses and system specifications for ISW, LSW and NSP.
- Approximately 21 of the deliverables are in the public domain. They cover:
- Final report on SR profiles and target hosts;
- Support of Common Command Language in an SR origin/target model;
- Recommendations to ISO;
- End-user systems, product packages and final reports for ISW, LSW and NSP;
- Final report on end-user involvement;
- Test plans and results for pilots.
