Country
This field contains the ISO two-letter country codes for any countries referred to in the news item. Entries in this field do not have associated text expansions.

Category
This field shows the category of the news item. The categories occurring in this field are described below. Because it is not possible to define some of the categories accurately, there may be some overlap. Other categories might be identified and added to this list in the future.

Closing Date
This field contains the deadline for any action required. For example, where the news item relates to a tender or a proposal, it contains the closing date for the submission. This field may contain multiple entries when there is more than one deadline.

Contact Person
This field contains the name, address, telephone number, and other details of the contact person or office to be contacted directly for further information.

Document Reference
This field contains a full reference to any source document for the news item, where this is appropriate.

Data Source Provider
This field shows the source of the original news item. For example, it may be the Official Journal, a Directorate-General, a programme, or some other source.

Date
This field shows the date that the record was last updated. It is not necessarily the date on which the information was current. However, when new information concerning an existing news item becomes available, a new record is normally created and records in this service are therefore not normally updated.

Event Date
This field shows a date for news items classified as Event in the Category field. The date is the date on which the event starts, or is to be held.

Expiry Date
This field shows the date on which the record expires. The expiry date is determined as follows:
One month after the Closing Date or the Event Date for news items classified as Tender or Event respectively.
Six months after the last update of the entry for all other news items. Expired records are retained in the service and can be retrieved and viewed.

General Information
This field contains either the text of the news item itself, or an abstract of the original text.
Example entry: MEPs voted in favour of a legislative resolution on the patenting of computer implemented inventions on 24 September. The vote followed months of intensive debate and lobbying, which several MEPs claimed had been the most aggressive they had ever experienced.
Related News
This field contains the Record Control Number (RCN) of one or more previous, directly related news items. Such earlier related records may be retrieved by searching the RCN field for the RCN shown in the News Relationships field. The earlier record in turn may contain the RCN of a still earlier related record. To ensure that all direct relationships are covered, more than one RCN may be given in the News Relationships field.

Programme Acronym
If the news item relates to one or more programmes, this field will contain the programme acronyms in the form of multiple entries.
This field contains only the programmes acronyms published in the RTD-Programmes service. The RTD-programmes services uses the official acronym given by the Commission. In the absence of an official acronym, CORDIS will generate its own acronym. Acronyms generated by CORDIS are indicated by the suffix C. For example: FRAMEWORK 6C.

Record Control Number
The Record Control Number provides a unique reference for each record in this database. The number may be up to six digits, eg 999999. The Record Control Number is the reference number given in the News Relationships field. The Record Control Number can be used to identify later related records that have the Record Control Number of the current record in their News Relationships field.

Remarks
This field typically contains information about deadlines for news items classified as Tender in the Category field.
Example entry: The deadline for submission of proposals is 15 December 2003.

Title
This field contains a title given to the news item by CORDIS News.
Example entry: Breakthrough by Dutch researchers could make e-paper a reality
Text
This field will eventually contain the full text of the news item, when this becomes available to the CORDIS service in electronic form. An abstract is provided in the General Information field.
This information is available only for news articles published before 1998.
Example entry: This field contains descriptive text that may extend to several paragraphs.
Search Tips
The Boolean operators "AND", "OR" and "NOT" may be combined with search terms in the text boxes. If two or more terms are entered with either a comma or a space separating them, the default operator will be "AND".
Phrase searches should be put in double quotes (e.g. "License Agreement").
Wildcards ("?" for 1 character, or "*" for multiple characters) may be used within terms or to truncate word endings (e.g. "parasit*";"analy?e").
Multiple terms may be selected in any of the list boxes in the Advanced Search or Professional Search interfaces. To select multiple terms using Windows, hold down the control key while clicking on your terms.
