An article recently published by the European Commission, DG XII, highlights the areas of the Fifth Framework Programme (FP5) that focus on research that is believed necessary to ensure that accurate and reliable measurements are available to improve competitiveness and the quality of life. The article, which appears in the Bulletin of Information of the Standards, Measurements and Testing Programme, identifies the thematic programme within FP5 "Promoting Competitive and Sustainable Growth", which includes a Generic Action on "Measurements and Testing" and Actions in support of the "Research infrastructure". The main objectives of the Generic Action, "Measurements and Testing", will deal with: - Support to standardisation and Community policies; - The fight against fraud; - Improvement of quality. Research and development projects should focus on instrumentation, methodologies for testing, and development of certified reference materials. According to the report, any researchers interested in submitting project proposals in these areas are advised to start talking to potential research partners now. The first call for proposals for FP5, including "Measurements and Testing", are expected in Spring 1999.
