European IPR Helpdesk Releases New Brochure: Making the Most of Your Horizon 2020 Project

Bringing research and its outcomes to the attention of non-scientific audiences, scientific peers, potential business partners or policymakers fosters collaboration and innovation. Hence, strategic communication, dissemination and exploitation measures help increase the impact of research and innovation in many ways.

As part of the training activities of the European IPR Helpdesk in the field of IP management and maximizing impact in Horizon 2020 projects, the team has released a new brochure specifically addressing the role of communication, dissemination and exploitation when it comes to increasing the impact of EU-funded research and innovation projects. “In our training workshops – when we address exploitation in Horizon 2020 projects – we have often been asked how IP management relates to communication, dissemination and exploitation. It became clear that there still exists some confusion about these terms and also, that there is a strong interest in learning more about how this subject should be addressed during the proposal and implementation phase of a project”, explains Jörg Scherer, CEO of the European IPR Helpdesk partner Eurice heading the training and communication activities of the project. “Although there are different information documents and manuals dealing with single aspects of this topic already available, we realized that a concise document was missing that tied the three concepts together on the one hand, but also helped to better define the individual terms on the other“, Mr. Scherer continues. In the development of the brochure, the European IPR Helpdesk team was supported by and closely collaborated with members from the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research and Innovation, and here the Common Support Centre in particular. Against this backdrop the brochure aims to clarify the terminology by illustrating the differences between communication, dissemination and exploitation, and point out the areas they have in common. It is intended as an introduction, and will provide a helpful overview when developing your project’s outreach and exploitation strategy and plan. Questions related to IP and IP management are highly significant in this whole context, too, and are addressed at various points throughout the document. The brochure complements the already existing portfolio of training formats and supporting material offered by the European IPR Helpdesk and the European Commission on this subject, putting a particular spotlight on the role and interplay of communication, dissemination and exploitation.
