Monica Barni, President of TOUR4EU and the Deputy Rectors of the 7 Universities from Tuscany all united for Research.

Tuscany and the seven universities take to the field in Brussels to make their voices heard about the future of European research and the Horizon Europe program, which will manage a large part of its funding from 2021. Monday and Tuesday a delegation led by the Vice President of the Region with responsibility for culture, Monica Barni, presented before representatives of the EU institutions - such as the Director General of the EU Commission's Research DG, Jean Eric Paquet, and some MEPs - the position of the universities of Tuscany on the regulation of Horizon Europe 2021-2027. A technical document containing a series of comments to the legislative text prepared by Tour4Eu, the new organization of Tuscan universities that aims to act as a catalyst for European funding for research, but also to strengthen the presence of universities in Europe. It includes the Universities of Florence, Pisa, Siena, University for foreigners of Siena, Scuola Imt High Studies Lucca, Scuola Normale Superiore and Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna. "We presented the results of a strong political choice of the Tuscany Region, which has always wanted to create a collaboration between the universities and the research centers of Tuscany, with the aim of placing the center of the social and economic development of our region in high training and research," explains Vice-President Barni. "Yesterday (Monday, ed), for example, was a very important moment of discussion with the general manager Paquet - he adds - who presented us what he thinks will be the novelties of the Horizon Europe program and that could be interesting for our universities." During the mission to Brussels, the Deputy Rectors of the universities "wanted to give importance to the fact that also in the next Horizon program the universities and research centers can always be at the center, with the right balance between basic and applicative research. That without basic research innovation also makes little sense," they explain together.
