Summary: Conventional training of a surgeon involves the acquisition of a number of skills, a long process that requires considerable attention to ultimately acquire a satisfactory base of knowledge, to facilitate apprehension and comprehension of situations, formulate diagnoses, guide decision making, and strengthen manual and technical skills thus leading to improved therapeutic abilities. Furthermore, exponential development of minimally invasive techniques, such as laparoscopic, endoscopic or robotic-assisted devices, raises the question of how to assess satisfactorily new complex surgery skills. As higher surgical performance and standardization of training have become normative and safety objectives, awareness coming from the United States of America and recently from the European Union has stressed the urgency for institutions to invest in new teaching strategies. Recently, as it was already tested with success in aviation training, training programs based on simulation along with the new paradigm “never the first time on patient” has been proved efficient tools to reduce variability in training methodology, technical skill, and the trainee’s confidence and competence. We have challenged in Nancy new concepts of tutorship so called "compagnonnage” programs to overcome educational difficulties related to an increasing number of students to train with ever-constant resources. We have conducted comparative studies to assess several criteria, such as reliability, face, content, construct, and concurrent validity of new virtual surgery simulator (laparoscopic, robotic, ORL, etc…). The expected application of our approaches is to provide an adjutant environment for learning surgery and to improve its assessment and proficiency.
