Work has begun on a series of science shops supported by STRATA, the Human Potential Programme's activity for the strategic analysis of policy issues. Science shops perform or mediate in research activities for civil organisations thereby offering extended access to research for those outside of academia. The project is supported by nine countries, including the USA, Israel and Romania. The results of this research will form the basis of a conference in Brussels in early 2001 which will aim to launch the science shop concept on an international basis, leading to cross discipline and cross border cooperation. It is hoped that this close international cooperation between science shops will allow the exchange of best practice for research methods and results as well as the support of new science shop initiatives.
