Early July saw the inauguration of the European Reference Laboratory for Industrial and Vehicle Emissions (ERLIVE) at the Joint Research Centre's Environment Institute (EI) by Philippe Busquin, European Commissioner for Research and Ortensio Zecchino, the Italian Minister for Research. The two-day opening event and workshop brought together European legislators, national authorities and experts from the automotive and oil industries. ERLIVE features both a pilot incinerator with full emissions control instrumentation and the first public full-size dynamic vehicle laboratory in Europe to meet the new EURO-IV standards on emissions for petrol and diesel vehicles. 'Research carried out there will contribute to the development of the European Research Area and to the implementation of research activities at both national and European level', says the Joint Research Centre.
