The European Commission has published the 1992 Annual Report for the Joint Research Centre's Institute for Remote Sensing Applications (IRSA). The Institute has the following objectives: - To evaluate and demonstrate possible applications of remote sensing in support of the sectoral policies of the European Commission, such as the Common Agricultural Policy, environment policy, development, fisheries, regional aid; - To undertake research on advanced methods for the interpretation and utilization of satellite data including their integration with geographical data; - To stimulate the scientific community in the use of earth observation satellites; this objective is complementary to that of the European Space Agency. The Commission's scientific, regulatory and administrative bodies are IRSA's main users. The Institute also provides scientific and technical support for the sectoral policies of the Commission, as well as exploratory research for future applications. The Institute is divided into five units: - Agricultural information systems; - Environmental mapping and modelling; - Marine environment; - Monitoring tropical vegetation; - Advanced techniques. The report describes the activities of each of these units, including the work programme for 1992, the objectives and milestones achieved in 1992, and perspectives for 1993.
