Call for tenders for supporting the methodologies of marine environmental monitoring

The European Commission has published a call for tenders for supporting the development of methodological standards in relation to the good environmental status of the seas under the Marine Strategy.

The central provision of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD 2008/56/EC) requires Member States to take the necessary measures to achieve or maintain 'good environmental status' (GES) in the marine environment by the year 2020.

Scientific and technical progress mean that underlying descriptors of a GES may have to be adapted over time. This means taking into account the dynamic nature of marine ecosystems, their natural variability and the pressures and impacts of human activity on marine environments and the impacts of climate change.

As part of this overall process, methodological standards need to be further developed. This requirement is related to the need for comparability of approaches in determining GES within and among marine regions.

Methodological standards under this call are defined in general terms as all methods developed and agreed in the framework of European or international conventions and are defined as methods for sampling, analysis, monitoring and assessment. These methods may include indicators and criteria.
