The European Commission has approved aid of ECU 4.1 million, to be provided by the Community's Structural Funds, for regional development in Flanders, Belgium. The aid has been awarded for two separate regional programmes: one adopted under the SME Community initiative for the adaptation of small and medium-sized enterprises to the single market (ECU 2.7 million); and one under the RETEX Community initiative for regions heavily dependent on the textiles and clothing sector (ECU 1.4 million). The SME programme for Flanders will provide a total of ECU 8.6 million (ECU 2.7 million from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), ECU 2.7 million from the Flemish government and ECU 3.2 million from the private sector) for measures aimed at increasing the competitiveness of SMEs by promoting permanent technological innovation. The programme contains the following measures: - Increasing awareness of and information to SMEs regarding product and process innovation; - Support with and implementation of innovation; - Networking; - Technical assistance. The RETEX programme for Flanders will provide a total of ECU 3 million (ECU 0.87 million from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), ECU 0.53 million from the European Social Fund (ESF), ECU 1.5 million from the Flemish government and ECU 0.1 million from the private sector) for the diversification of the economic fabric of the regions of Westhoek, Middenkust and Zeevisserijgebied. The programme contains the following measures: - Counselling and education aimed at promoting diversification; - Technological support to viable parts of the textile and clothing industry; - Technical assistance.
