Six projects have been selected following the first call for proposals for joint EC-Canada projects under the European Community-Canada programme for cooperation in higher education and training. Fifty-six proposals were submitted before the deadline of 26 January 1996, and the six selected projects will benefit from a combined total budget of ECU 600,000 and CDN 1 million. The six projects involve a total of 45 partner institutions, and the indications are that well over 450 students will benefit from the cooperation activities during the three years in which the projects will receive support. The funding provided is also intended to establish a basis for long-term cooperation, after the funding period has elapsed. The six projects selected are: - Integration and disintegration in multi-level systems of governance; - The training of modern language teachers; - Avenirs Atlantique; - Intercultural engineering and management training; - Victimization, mediation and restorative justice; - Promoting student involvement in northern, peripheral regions of the EC and Canada. A second call for proposals was launched on 16 April 1996, with a closing date of 4 October 1996 (see RTD-News RCN 5930). This second call will benefit from twice the budget of the first call, enabling a further 12 projects, and up to 120 higher education institutions, to be involved in the programme.
