The European Commission, DG VII, has launched an open call to tender for support for the MARTRANS project. MARTRANS, part of the Maritime Information Society G7 pilot project, aims at establishing a real-time information system for cargoes and vessels in order to enhance logistics efficiency of ports, ship-owners, operators, consignors and consignees. The concrete aims of the project are: - Interconnectivity of existing Port Community Systems (PCSs); - Automation of non-automated ports; - Tracing and tracking. Against this background, the Commission is looking for support for the following tasks: - The development of a modular and scalable EDI system to be used in small and medium-sized ports. This system should be interconnectable and interoperable with existing PCSs and should be able to use different standards; - The design of a virtual intermodal transportation chain, demonstrating the benefits of a maritime information highway, with special emphasis on MARTRANS; - The development of a multimedia presentation on MARTRANS. The contract will last for 12 months from the date of signature. Tenderers must demonstrate experience in the project area.
