In the framework of BAP (Biotechnology Action Programme 1985-1989), a significant portion of the total research effort was devoted to the evaluation and elimination of the risks possibly associated to the release into the environment of organisms submitted to genetic engineering. Research areas included containment, depollution bacteria, plant-interacting microbes, transgenic plants, and genetic engineered viruses. A summary of the achievements of this research and detailed final reports from the projects involved are available in a two-part Commission publication "Biotechnology R&D in the EC: Risk assessment" (Part I: "Catalogue of BAP achievements on risk assessment for the period 1985-1990". Part II: "Detailed final report of BAP contractors in risk assessment, 1985-1990").
