The European Commission has published its first call for proposals under the new Community action programme promoting non-governmental organizations (NGOs) active in the field of environmental protection. The call is open to European NGOs whose activities cover all or some of the Member States and countries neighbouring the European Union. Financial support is available for activities foreseen in the annual work programmes of such organizations, in so far as these activities cover several European countries. In addition, activities to be supported should meet the following criteria: - Be of Community interest; - Contribute significantly to the further development and implementation of Community environmental policy and legislation; - Meet the principles underlying the Fifth Environmental Action Programme. The rate of overall Community participation shall, in principle, not exceed 50% of the budgeted activities and administrative costs associated with the annual work programme of successful applicants. In the event of approval by the Commission, a single contract covering all the activities to be cofinanced will be concluded between the Commission and the party submitting the proposal.
