Bringing the public into the food security debate

ORION, a new European initiative to open up science to society
ORION is a new collaborative European project to explore ways in which research and funding organizations in life sciences and biomedicine can open up the way they fund, organize and do research. The Centre for Genomic Regulation in Barcelona, Spain, coordinates this project and is one of the nine partners in the project. ORION kicks off in Barcelona this week.

Barcelona geared up to host 300 young biomedical researchers in 2017
To foster the next generation of scientific leaders, IRB Barcelona kicks off the international symposium series ENABLE, part of the Horizon 2020 Programme, for young researchers working in the Life Sciences. Involving scientific debates, career sessions, and outreach activities, these 3-day symposia are jointly coordinated by young students from four European centres. After first event in Barcelona, the ENABLE symposia will be held in Copenhagen in 2018, Nijmegen in 2019, and Milan in 2020.

Europe backs its future leaders in biomedicine
The EU’s Horizon 2020 Programme has awarded EUR 500,000 to the project “European Academy for Biomedical Science” (ENABLE) to allow young scientists organise a new format of international symposia designed to strengthen their future. In 2017, Barcelona will host the first ENABLE conference. This event will be followed by annual events in Copenhagen (2018), Nijmegen (2019), and Milan (2020). The cities correspond to the seats of the research centres that participate in ENABLE.

More efficient and less polluting aircraft engines
Within the OPTIMIZE European Project, DMP and IK4-TEKNIKER are exploring the latest trends in aircraft engine technology to cut fuel consumption and environmental pollution. The R&D Centre will be conducting trials using a test bench to check the efficiency of the gears that make up the reducing gearboxes incorporated into aircraft engines.
