Predecir mejor las tormentas de polvo destructivas
Un equipo de investigadores dedicado al estudio de las causas que provocaron la tormenta de enorme envergadura que afectó a Oriente Próximo y Chipre en 2015 identificó la erosión como el factor principal, un problema agravado por la guerra en Siria e Iraq No obstante, a pesar de que la tormenta batió records, no se predijo, en parte por la dificultad que entraña predecir este tipo de fenómenos.

Auf dem Weg zu einer verbesserten Prognose von zerstörerischen Sandstürmen
Forscher untersuchen die Ursachen für den Rekord-Sandsturm, der im Jahr 2015 den Nahen Osten und Zypern in Mitleidenschaft zog. Sie identifizierten Erosion als einen wesentlichen Faktor, ein Problem, das sich durch den Krieg in Syrien und im Irak zuspitzt. Obwohl der Sturm rekordverdächtig war, konnte er jedoch nicht vorhergesehen werden – solche Ereignisse lassen sich immer noch schwer prognostizieren.

Towards the better forecasting of destructive dust storms
Researchers examining the causes of the record dust storm that affected the Middle East and Cypus in 2015, identified erosion as one key factor, a problem that the war in Syria and Iraq is making more acute. However, although record-breaking, the storm was not forecast – such events remain hard to predict.

W kierunku lepszego prognozowania niszczycielskich burz pyłowych
Naukowcy analizujący przyczyny rekordowej burzy pyłowej, która nawiedziła Bliski Wschód i Cypr w 2015 r., wskazali na jeden kluczowy czynnik, który nasila wojna tocząca się w Syrii i Iraku. Mimo iż burza była rekordowa, nie udało się jej przewidzieć, bo tego typu zdarzenia są nadal trudne do prognozowania.

2016 STRONGMAR conference - A sea of science

Winter School on Underwater Vision and Robotics
The Winter School on Underwater Vision and Robotics was held at Girona (Spain) from the 17th to the 21st of October 2016. It was organised by our partners of the Universitat de Girona (ViCOROB – Computer Vision and Robotics Research Group and CIRS – Girona Underwater Vision and Robotics Research Centre). The programme comprised lectures on underwater robotics, underwater vision and underwater mission planning; and hands-on training on underwater vision and underwater mission planning.

The STRONGMAR project promoted the Summer School on Introduction to Advanced Marine Technologies at Portugal. This school was held from the 27th of June to the 8th of July 2016, and comprised lectures and hands-on training at sea. Euro-BioCy Research Proposal Competition
The Molecular Medicine Research Center (MMRC) of the University of Cyprus, within the framework of the project “Biobanking and the Cyprus Human Genome Project (CY-Biobank)”, announces the Euro-BioCy Competition. Post-graduate students or early-stage postdoctoral researchers are invited to submit innovative proposals in the field of nephrology. Proposals in neurology/dementias/aging and oncology/tumur biology, will be equally considered. The Competition is open until Friday 27 November 2015.
