4. A renewed look at Europe's population distribution
![]()
A new map developed by the JRC provides a more accurate picture of how population is distributed in the EU. With a resolution of 100 x 100 metres, the map allows visual, quantitative and qualitative comparisons between different territories, cities and regions. This is thanks to the combination of statistical population data reported at commune level with several detailed cartographic datasets on the location of residential areas.

On the economic side, I think we are facing a really big challenge which is a change in the way the world is working. I mean that, before, the western countries were the centre and now, this centre is starting to move,to diversify, to be set in different places and we have to find a new place, as Europe, in this new game I would say.

55. Enhanced solar power by dry-cooled energy generation (via CORDIS)
A cutting edge system is being developed to deploy more solar-based energy plants, enabling the delivery of cleaner power more efficiently, while keeping Europe at the leading edge of energy technologies.
The aim of the EU-funded MACCSOL project ('The Development and Verification of a Novel Modular Air Cooled Condenser for Enhanced Concentrated Solar Power Generation') has been to develop more efficient dry cooling technologies.
The project's new 'modular air-cooled condenser' (MACC) incorporates sensors that can detect changes in temperature, ambient wind, and fan flow rate, all of which control algorithms to continuously vary fan speed.

On its own, Europe is not responsible of the crisis. I think Europe has done plenty of good things but we need to calm down a bit the investors and not trying to find always the best interest. I don't think obligation, European obligations such as Greece and other, have to be on the market I think, personally, that's the reason why the crisis is so high todays, that they're speculating on products that are involving our daily life every day. That is my point of view.

59. New approach to improve the integration of earth observation data (via CORDIS)
One of the fundamental challenges in the 21st Century is to achieve a greater understanding of the complex interactions between environment and human society.
To meet this challenge, the social and environmental sciences need to be better integrated, to move from disciplinary to multidisciplinary research and close the gap between citizens, scientists and policy makers.
The EU-funded EuroGEOSS project ('European approach to GEOSS'), with EUR 6 million in European funding, asked: what kind of information systems do we need to facilitate this major multi-disciplinary research effort? And, how we can best support closer interaction among specialists from different fields, as well as non-specialist stakeholders?
The project worked specifically within the context of the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS), which is supposed to provide a framework for integrating the world's earth observation efforts.

The propagation of spillages after ship disasters is one of the biggest threats to the marine environment. 5. Research Headlines - A breath of fresh air for Europe's citizens
Over half of the world's population lives in urban areas and that proportion is rising. This has severe consequences for the quality of the air we are exposed to thanks to increased transportation and industry within built-up areas. Rising levels of pollution prompted the European Commission in recent years to fund a number of projects into air quality across the EU at the city, regional and country level.

10. Success Stories - Banishing the "black cloud": How rice research could clear Egypt's skies
It's a phenomenon known locally as the "black cloud", and it plagues Egypt every autumn after the rice harvest: an estimated 4 million tonnes of rice straw is burnt every season, spewing some 80,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide into the skies. It leaves a choking, toxic layer of thick smog hanging just 25 meters above over the entire Nile valley for weeks, and adds to the already polluted air over the Cairo megalopolis.
