R&D&I in Northern Hungary
North Hungarian RTDI (research, technological development and innovation) activities lag considerably behind the EU and also the national average by most indicators. Low level of R&D intensity heavily concentrated in relatively few large firms under foreign ownership, an even lower level of R&D spending both in absolute terms or as a proportion of the GDP and weak patent activity are the main characteristics of the regional innovation performance. Nevertheless, in spite of mainly unfavourable statistics, there are positive indicators in national comparison as regards the number of research themes and developing tasks per researcher and the ratio of researchers with scientific degree. Furthermore, it can be considered as a favourable result that the region’s share from innovation related domestic and EU funds has been increasing since 2007, after a long period of nearly monotonic decline.
