6th FP (FP6) The 6th Research and Development Framework Programme of the European Union covers the period 2003 to 2006 and has an overall budget of € 17.5 billion.

Call for proposals Instrument used by the European Commission to launch research activities or research support initiatives. The calls for proposals are published in the Official Journal of the Commission and give details of the projects concerned.
Collective Research Project Research carried out by laboratories on behalf of manufacturing associations or groups of SMEs in order to improve their competitiveness.
Cooperative Research Project Type of project specifically dedicated to SMEs. It helps SMEs capable of innovation but without internal research structures to contribute to the preparation of future Community technological research and development, including monitoring and evaluation activities. (Formerly "CRAFT".)
Consortium Institutional research network.
Consortium Agreement Contract which governs the operation of the research consortium. It is compulsory for certain types of project, such as integrated projects and networks of excellence.

Coordination Action Type of project intended to promote and support networking and the coordination of research and innovation activities with a view to improving their integration.
CORDIS Acronym for COmmunity Research and Development Information Service. CORDIS is the European Commission site intended to provide information on initiatives and progress concerning innovation and research and development in Europe.
CRAFT Acronym for "Cooperative Research Action for Technology". FP5 terminology (see Cooperative research).

EPSS (Electronic Proposal Submission System) Computerised system (on CORDIS site) for the preparation and electronic submission of project proposals.

Grant to budget Direct financial participation by the European Commission in the costs of research projects. The contribution varies according to the type of project.
Guides for proposers With the calls for proposals the Commission publishes guides for applicants giving practical information for the preparation and submission of a proposal.

Instruments The Commission European defines as "instruments" the different types of project applicable to the research themes proposed by the 6th RDFP. Examples: CRAFT, networks of excellence, STREPS, etc.
IP Acronym for Integrated Projects.
Integrated Projects Research projects aimed at integrating the critical mass of activity necessary to achieve ambitious and precise scientific and technological objectives.

Network of Excellence Type of project aimed at enhancing excellence in certain key domains, with a view to achieving European leadership in them.

SME Acronym for Small and Middlesized Enterprise
Specific Support Actions Type of project intended to stimulate, encourage and facilitate the participation of SMEs, small research teams, new and remote research centres and organisations in applicant countries, in the priority theme activities, in particular by the networks of excellence and the integrated projects.

Strategic Targeted REsearch Projects (STREPS) Research projects intended to develop new products, services and knowledge or to prove the benefits of new technologies.

Work Programme The work programme states the scientific objectives and the expected results for the research projects. There is a work programme for each of the 7 priority themes of the 6th Framework Programme.
