The region of South Sweden - An excellent climate for innovative start-ups --- The region of South Sweden, the six most southern counties in Sweden, has a population of 2.3 million inhabitants. Apart from Malmö, the third largest city in Sweden with 250,000 inhabitants, and Lund with 100,000 inhabitants, the cities of South Sweden - the SydSam Region – are relatively small. It is remarkable that in as many as nine of the small cities in the area there are established science parks connected to local universities. The science parks are situated in Lund, Malmö, Halmstad, Jönköping, Kalmar, Karlskrona, Kristianstad, Ronneby and Växjö. The innovative climate is a result af a close co-operation between local business, public sector actors and universities - in accordance with the so called Triple Helix Model. |

Lund --- Ideon Science Park Ideon is Scandinavia’s first science park, and was founded in 1983 with the aim of making use of all the ideas and knowledge available at Lund Institute of Technology, the engineering faculty of Lund University. Since the very beginning, twenty years ago, Ideon has been able to tell of countless success stories, arising from meetings, collaboration, development and innovation. At present there are 200 companies in the park, with approximately 2200 employees. The competitive edge of Ideon is the ability of networking and acting as a knowledge intermediary between people and ideas. The science park is closely connected to the Lund Institute of Technology. Different high-tech research companies are born here; mostly from the IT and bio-technology sectors. The Greenhouse Ideon was established as a co-operation between the Lund University, Teknopol, Ideon and external advisors or "gardeners". The idea is to encourage researchers to start high tech companies. Ideon Business Center offers companies professional assistance through some 20 well reputed "service providers". Ideon offers opportunities for R&D companies in IT, biotechnology and other high-tech areas, to develop and grow to meet the demands of the open market. Ideon is a meeting place, as meetings play a central role at Ideon; especially the unique encounter between people and ideas, which often leads to innovation, development and success.

Jönköping --- Science Park Jönköping The vision of establishing a science park in the Jönköping area is now being realised. Science Park Jönköping is the new venue for knowledge-intensive companies and dynamic business innovators seeking to explore new business opportunities. As well as having a good business concept, any business venture must be based on a spirit of entrepreneurship, and the availability of an established infrastructure to secure future growth and development. Science Park Jönköping offers intra- and entrepreneurs access to a knowledge-intensive business platform, and an established infrastructure. Our operational concept is to be instrumental in encouraging creative and interactive meetings between business, industry and higher education and research institutions, in order to develop and create new business areas and extended business opportunities. Based on a strong brand concept and image, Science Park Jönköping will generate, develop and encourage new networks as well as interactive co-operation between satellites, offering access to and encompassing the whole arena of global development.

Ronneby --- Soft Center The watchwords for soft Center and its network in Ronneby are collaboration, development and competence. The working environment within the Soft Center buildings has long acted as a powerful engine for collaboration, generating and developing a number of new ideas, primarily in IT, communications and media.
One reason for the success is the constant interaction between companies, staff and the Institute of Technology. Practically unique when it was coined in Ronneby in the early 1990s, this approach has resulted in around 2800 people working or studying in the Soft Center environment. The premises have constantly been expanded and now cover around 38 000 m2.
About 55 companies currently operate from Soft Center. The dynamic environment has attracted companies targeting both national and international markets. The majority of the businesses focus on IT and software development.
The presence of Blekinge Institute of Technology, and the increasing proportion of IT-related training companies, enables the skills level to be kept extremely high for the companies existing and future staff, the staff at the institute and the students.
Soft Center Network To further promote the development of the region and interaction between companies, community and the Institute of Technology, steps have been taken by the municipality of Ronneby. As a result a network has been born where organisations with interest in applied and industrial IT can take part in various projects. Software development companies are introduced to high tech manufacturing companies to analyse the need for development of Work Smart solutions.
