New CORDIS Belgian Presidency Information Service Dedicated to the European Research and Innovation Area
Date: 25.06.2001

Presidency: Belgium

On 1st July 2001 the Minister-President of the Government of the Brussels-Capital Region François-Xavier de Donnea, who will chair the Research Council during the Belgian Presidency (1st July - 31st December 2001), will launch a specialised CORDIS-Belgian Presidency Research and Innovation Information Service. The service can be found at: cordis.europa.eu/belgium.

The new service has been developed jointly by the Belgian authorities responsible for research and the European Commission and is an example of close co-operation between the Belgian Presidency and the European institutions. It will be hosted by CORDIS, the Community Research and Development Information Service, which is a gateway to the research and innovation activities of the EU Member States in the context of the European Research Area.

The CORDIS-Belgian Council Presidency Service also represents the Presidency's efforts to ensure a new role for research within society by providing the public and the scientific community with dynamic, timely and pertinent information.

"The aim of this website is to supply you with concise information on the work of the Belgian Presidency of the Research Council and to help you follow its developments and outcomes, said Minister-President de Donnea in his welcome address for the service. "Here you will also be able to find out more about concrete actions and initiatives launched during this period."

The service will provide a special section for a detailed presentation of the five presidency research priorities:

  1. Speeding up the establishment of the European Research and Innovation Area
  2. Adopting a joint position on the next framework programme for research and technological development (2002-2006)
  3. Making Europe into a model area open to the world
  4. Strengthening the relationship between science and society
  5. Advancing the achievements in European space policy

The Belgian Presidency Service on CORDIS will provide news, practical information and conclusions on:

  • EU Research Councils, taking place on 18 October and 10 December 2001
  • High level conferences and special Presidency events fostering the European Research Area and covering: the contribution of social sciences and humanities (29-30 October 2001); popularisation of science and technology in Europe and its regions (17-18 December 2001); and European research open to the world (17-18 September 2001)
  • Conference on the role of SMEs in the next Framework Research Programme (19 November 2001)
  • The celebration of the 30th anniversary of the European Co-operation in the Field of Scientific and Technological Research, COST (10 October 2001)

The new service will be available in English, French, Dutch and German and highlight the Belgian involvement in the European Union research programmes. The service will feature research and innovation from the Belgian Regions and Communities in the light of the specific Presidency objective to examine ways of strengthening the role of the regions in the European Research Area. Finally, the service will provide spotlights on Belgian research traditions, including close-ups on the five Belgian science Noble Prize winners.

1. From 1 July 2001
