CORDIS Express - New, Faster Access to Knowledge, Finance and International Partnerships
Date: 25.09.2002
CORDIS Express - New, Faster Access to Knowledge, Finance and International Partnerships

Company managers and entrepreneurs across Europe can finally find a single source for clear, newsworthy, free and reliable updates on EU research funding, technological intelligence and innovation information - the new electronic CORDIS Express digest. Every Friday CORDIS Express will select, summarize and put into context through a single and easy to navigate web page (cordis.europa.eu/express) the latest and most topical European research and innovation developments as reported and provided by CORDIS, the European Commission's research and development information service on the Web.

To demonstrate its relevance to small and medium, as well as start-up companies, CORDIS Express will be officially launched on 26-27 September 2002, during the Fourth European SME Technology Days in Leeds, which will announce the opportunities for financing SMEs from the new EU research budget.

Practical Insight into the EUR 17, 5 billion EU Research Funding

CORDIS is the official information service for participation in the EU's Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) (2002-2006). With the countdown to its forthcoming official launch, the new CORDIS Express digest will select the most important headline news and provide introductory guides to detailed FP6 information and documentation as it becomes available week by week. The forthcoming issue will introduce the publication of over 11, 000 project ideas, resulting from a wide consultation of the Commission with Europe's research community and published on CORDIS to promote partnering, especially between SMEs and research organisations.

The new digest also devotes three of its regular sections to updates on the CORDIS services for partners, ongoing projects and exploitable technologies, providing a practical insight into the various stages of a research project, from laboratory through to marketplace.

"Access to knowledge, finance and partnerships are the key ingredients for innovation and the growth of small companies. CORDIS has the unique position to provide this at European level and directly online. Our mission now is to meet the challenge of presenting EU research information for use by the business community," says Kurt König, head of the unit at the European Commission's Directorate-General Enterprise, which is managing the service. "CORDIS Express adds a new quality to the enormous quantity of information that CORDIS has on store - it acts as a free "electronic consultant" on what is new in European research and innovation and where to find it."

Update on Entrepreneurial Policies and Best Examples from Around Europe

In its launch issue and as part of the regular "Focus on Innovation" section, CORDIS Express will preview a case study, carried out by Alan Quévreux, Head of European Department, ANRT, on Catalonia's innovation system, which challenges the emphasis placed on research funding programmes by many policy-makers. It shows that networking between industry, technology centres and researchers can be a more powerful mechanism for new ways of thinking. This is part of a larger analysis on "Innovation Policy and the Regulatory Framework", scheduled for publication in October 2002 on the CORDIS Innovation Policy Studies Service.

CORDIS Express is free and available in English with links to content in five European languages: English, French, German, Spanish and Italian. With its official launch, from 27 September 2002 users will be able to register at cordis.europa.eu/express and receive it automatically by e-mail.

Journalists attending the Forth European SME Technology Days are invited for a demonstration at the CORDIS stand in the exhibition area.
